Cabin flashback to a year ago!

Staking out the cabin, this is the kitchen ~ I'm standing where the sink will be. lol

Setting the footers. Gosh, I was just giddy with excitement when they dug out that basement!

Getting ready for the basement walls. I can't think of one step that wasn't totally exciting for us. Every step was just a thrill. And those of you that e~know us, you know we LOVE BEAVER.

Getting those walls up. The basement floor was poured the day or two before Thanksgiving.

Our logs were delivered November 30th. They started tossing logs on Dec. 1st in the snow.

This sure has been a fun and amazing year!!

Except, for the miserable experience we had with our absolute loser concrete guy (who still has not fixed his violations on the deck footers, from last December) ~ this has been a dream come true. I still need to pinch myself ~ we used to dreeeeam about doing this cabin when we first bought the property 7 years ago.

Tim and Mike have done an outstanding job, huh!! For the most part, this cabin has been built by two guys. We did have help w/ those beams and the roof. Tim also spent a lot of time working on it alone while Mike was here working.

Here is the "cabin" link for those of you who want to go see this project as it has come along. This blog has been great to see the progress ... on one hand it went by quick, but on the other... it was A LOT of hard work for the boys. They froze their bupp cheeps off last winter.

fabulous!!! always good to look and see how far you have come - it can be so much more encouraging than focusing on how far you have left to go!

Tonya, we still have a long way to go ... still need to add the covered deck around the back and the side, the balcony off my sisters room and the upstairs... the plumbing, electrical, air conditioning ... then the drywall ... radiant floor heating, etc... but since we are "owner builder"... and we are paying as we go....

we were pretty much forced to build NOW by the Water Right peeps in Utah... or we would have lost our "like gold" acre foot of water rights, since we drilled a well about 5 years ago ... we had always planned a cabin after Mike retired.... so this is a few years earlier than planned.

So...it's just a fun project we can work on...

and I DID get an extension on the water rights a month or so ago since I have proved we started the main residence... we have 5 years to complete...

I must admit... now I want to hurry and get it done.. it's been so awesome and fun..
I just want to move right in.. hee hee!!

AND... AS SOON as we can, we still have a garage to put up ... it will be butted up against the mudroom. That will just change the whole look!! It's going to be so pretty. (My parents will be putting up their own in law quarters over the garage).

We were sorely disappointed last summer when the log cabin kit bid came in $64,000 higher than our "high guestimate" when we were drawing up the plans...

for three months... we thought we were doing the whole thing...
but the engineering was so complicated and required so many beams...

so.. oh well...if it weren't for Timmy, we would have ditched these plans... but he talked us into just adding the garage later (which I didn't know we could do w/ a log cabin) ... so we had to square the house up a bit and shrink it (the master bedroom and the family room was to pop out)

Tim had so many ways and ideas for us to bring the cost down ... we pressed on so we could build this dream cabin.

The difference is amazing. I'm always impressed to see the skills of builders. It's a gift.

(p.s. on buying a gun, may I suggest a Taurus Titanium 38 revolver snubnose for you. They are very lite in weight, hold 5 rounds, which is more than you would need for an intruder or close attack. Easy to slip into the pocket of your purse, a pocket, glove compartment, whatever.

I suggest you take a course and get your carry permit and then regularly practice shooting to improve your accuracy.

45's are good, but heavy for a woman with small bones, a 9 mm is good also, but again a little heavy for a female unless you have strong arms and wrists. Just my opinion.)
